Loehr's Two Scores Lead #5 UMW Field Hockey Past Bridgewater, 5-1

Freshman Christine Loehr scored a pair of goals in leading the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-1 win over Bridgewater College on Tuesday at the Battleground. UMW improves to a nation's-best 8-0 on the year.

Freshman Ashlin Jones started the scoring for UMW, just seconds after being inserted into the game, on a Haley Kane pass with 21:11 left in the first half. Loehr scored on a pass from Jenna Steele four minutes later on a play in the circle created by Caitlin Baker.

With 12:20 remaining, sophomore Nicole Guinn scored unassisted, and Steele closed the half with an unassisted score with 3:59 left.

In the second half, Loehr score with 29 minutes left on a Baker pass. Bridgewater scored in the waning minutes to spoil the shutout, with Galen Goodman scoring the goal.

"Caitlin and I have been practicing those shots over the last week", said Loehr. "It was good to see our work pay off in the game." After scoring just one goal in Sunday's win over Roanoke, Loehr admitted the Eagles came out tight. "We just need to come out and relax and have fun, and do what we know we can do, and we did that today."

Mary Washington led in shots, 25-9, and had eight penalty corners to five for the visitors. Junior emily Badis had four saves and Megan McLaughlin added two for Mary Washington, who will return to action next Tuesday when they visit Catholic University at 7:00 p.m.
