Charney Named National Division III Field Hockey Player of the Year by SynapseSports.com; Five Eagles Honored on All-America Teams

Senior midfielder Lisa Charney, who led the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to its first Final Four appearance in 19 years, was selected as the NCAA Division III National Player of the Year by SynapseSports.com. Charney was joined on the All-America First team by junior Caitlin Baker, and senior goalie Claire Gianelle was named as a third team selection. Freshmen Haley Kane and Jenna Steele were named to the national all-freshman team.

Charney broke the UMW single season scoring record with 25 goals, anfd also posted four assists. In addition, she led the team with seven defensive saves. She was also selected as the NFHCA Regional Player of the Year on Monday.

Baker scored 10 goals and added a school-record 17 assists for the Eagles, while Gianelle limited opponents to a 1.09 GAA in UMW's 20-2 season.

Kane proved to be one of the top defenders in the region for UMW, and even scored four times from here defender position, while Steele scored 13 goals in also being named to the national All-Freshman squad.
