YORK, Pa. -- The Capital Athletic Conference announced its Sept.
3, 2012, weekly award winners.
FIELD HOCKEY
Mary Washington senior
midfielder FLORENCE GEORGE (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) was
selected as the CAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week while
Salisbury sophomore goalie RACHEL CLEWER (Elkton, Md./North East)
was selected as the CAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week
for Sept. 3, 2012.
George is the first CAC
Offensive Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal
and adding an assist in leading the unranked Eagles to a victory
over 16th-ranked Lebanon Valley. She scored the team’s
first two goals of the season in a 3-1 win - the second-straight
year the unranked Eagles stopped the ranked Flying Dutchmen.
Clewer was picked for
the CAC defensive award after recording eight saves in a pair of
shutout victories at the Wilkes Invitational. Clewer played
more minutes in her first weekend as the starter at SU (123) than
in her five appearances during her freshman season (77).
MEN’S SOCCER
York freshman forward
BRENDAN SABERTON (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum) was selected as the
CAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week while Mary
Washington sophomore goalie TYLER BACK (Falls Church, Va./George
Mason) was picked as the CAC Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of
the Week for Sept. 3, 2012.
Saberton picked up the
CAC offensive award in his first collegiate weekend after
contributing three goals in two victories at Christopher Newport,
including both scores in a 2-1 win over the 13th-ranked
Captains.
Back went the distance
in both UMW weekend victories, recording three saves in a pair of
1-0 victories over Hampden-Sydney and Eastern Mennonite as the
Eagles captured their tournament title.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Mary Washington junior
forward ERIN REYNOLDS (Oakton, Va./Oakton) was named the CAC
Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week while Marymount
sophomore defender DANNI BANKINS (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley)
was selected as the CAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of
the Week for Sept. 3, 2012.
Reynolds scored three
goals and two assists as the Eagles posted a pair of last-minute
5-4 victories in the Bridgewater Tournament. Reynolds had two
goals and two assists, including the game-winning goal in the final
minute of the second OT period, against the hosts in the
season-opening contest. The next day, she scored an
unassisted goal in the second half as the Eagles rallied for two
goals in the last 10 minutes and the victory against Averett.
Bankins led a defensive
effort that allowed just seven total shots in the Saints’ two
home victories. Marymount’s defensive unit went more
than 90 minutes during the weekend without giving up an attempt on
goal, helping the Saints open the season with two wins for the
second-straight year.
