#5 UMW Field Hockey Tops Wesley, 4-2, for 2012 CAC Championship

Senior midfielder Lisa Charney scored a pair of goals to lead the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-2 win over Wesley College in the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference championship on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 18-1 in gaining their second CAC title in three years, and advance to the NCAA Tournament.

It was Wesley who jumped ahead early, scoring the game's first goal at 5:28 on an unassisted goal from Danielle Tearl. Charney tied the score at one at 22:14, after the Eagles were awarded a penalty stroke. The game remained tied at halftime.

In the second, the Eagles took the lead at 44:00 as junior Caitlin Baker scored on a Florence George penalty corner. Wesley tied the score at 55:30 on a Madison Leone score. The Eagles took the lead for good with 9:08 remaining, as Charney connected on the eventual game winner. The Eagles tacked on an insurance goal in the final minute, as Amy Abernathy scored on a Jenna Steele assist.

The Eagles led in shots, 20-7, and in penalty corners, 10-3. Senior Claire Gianelle made three stops for the Eagles, while Wesley's Elizabeth Groom had six saves and Brooke Gannon added a defensive save for the Wolverines.

Mary Washington wins the CAC field hockey title for the second time in three years, and fifth time overall. The Eagles advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years, and ninth time overall. UMW will await its seed and location for its first NCAA game. The announcement for the Division III field will be announced on Monday.
