Baker Leads #5 UMW Field Hockey Past St. Mary's, 5-1, in CAC Semifinals

Junior midfielder Caitlin Baker scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to lead the fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-1 win over St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference semifinal action on Thursday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 17-1 on the season.

It was St. Mary's who opened the scoring, connecting on the first shot of the game at 3:21 on a deflection by Alli McIntosh of an Ally Dahlen shot. The Eagles tied the score at 10:12 as Florence George scored on a Baker assist.

Baker then scored twice for UMW, at 14:15 unassisted and again at 29:12 on a George assist. UMW led, 3-1, at halftime.

In the second, senior Lisa Charney scored unassisted at 38:56, and Jenna Steele scored unassisted four minutes later to cap the scoring.

The Eagles led in shots, 19-4, and in penalty corners, 22-2. Senior goalie Claire Gianelle had no saves and Charney one defensive save for Mary Washington, while Christie Bishop had three saves to pace three St. Mary's goalkeepers.

Mary Washington will host the 2012 Capital Athletic Conference Championship on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. against Wesley College, who won at #2 Salisbury University in three overtimes on Thursday.
