Sophomore Amy Abernathy scored a pair of goals to lead the seventh-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-2 win at Johns Hopkins University on Thursday night in Baltimore. The Eagles improve to 13-1 on the season.

The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the 16th minute, as Alexa Lantiere scored. Senior captain Lisa Charney tied the score eight minutes later on a penalty stroke, and sophomore Christine Downie gave UMW the lead for good five minutes later, giving UMW a 2-1 halftime edge.

Abernathy would provide all the offense the Eagles would need with a pair of goals less than four minutes apart in the second half, the first coming on an assist from Downie and the second coming off a rebound of her initial shot that hit the post.

The Eagles led in shots, 27-21, and JHU led in penalty corners, 11-5. UMW goalie Claire Gianelle had a season-high 14 saves.

UMW will visit top-ranked Salisbury University in a battle for first place in the Capital Athletic Conference on Saturday at 6:00 p.m.
