George's Late Goal Lifts #7 UMW Field Hockey Past Washington (Md.)

Senior midfielder Florence George scored the game winning goal with just 3:17 remaining in the game as the seventh-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team edged Washington (Md.) College, 2-1, on Tuesday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 12-1 on the season.

The Shorewomen jumped ahead of the Eagles, as Kristen Wille scored unassisted with 20 minutes remaining in the first half. Washington held the lead through halftime, until senior Amy Stevens scored with 26 minutes left in regulation.

George provided the game winner with 3:17 remaining. The Eagles led in shots, 19-12, and in penalty corners, 13-6. Senior Claire Gianelle had seven saves for the Eagles, while Stephanie Harryman had five saves and Hillary Kane added a defensive save for Washington.

The Eagles will return to action on Thursday night when they visit Johns Hopkins University at 7:00 p.m.
