#5 UMW Field Hockey Falls at #13 CNU, 3-2, in Double OT

The fifth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to tie the score, but fell in double overtime on Saturday at #13 Christopher Newport, 3-2 to fall to 11-1 on the season.

Christopher Newport jumped ahead early, scoring in the second minute of play, and increased the lead to 2-0 just before halftime.

The Eagles cut into the deficit at 54:23, as Christine Downie scored on a jenna Steele assist, and tied the score at 66:31, as Caitlin Baker scored unassisted. After a scoreless overtime period, the Captains scored with 1:01 left in the second on a goal by Marlene Lichty.

The loss ends UMW's 11-game win streak to open the year. The Eagles led in shots, 18-16, and had 13 penalty corners to nine for the hosts. Claire Gianelle had nine saves for the Eagles.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Washington (Md.) College at the Battleground at 4:00 p.m.
