#7 UMW Field Hockey Tops #9 Catholic, 2-1

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team remained as one of just five undefeated teams left in the nation by topping its third nationally-ranked opponent of the season in #9 Catholic University, 2-1, on Tuesday at the Battleground. UMW improves to a nation's-best 9-0 on the season.

"We had a tough battle today against a top opponent in Catholic and came out with the win", said UMW head coach Lindsey Elliott. "It was a total team effort, and the players should be proud of what they've accomplished so far this season."

The Eagles opened the scoring with 23:11 remaining in the first half, as freshman Jenna Steele scored on an assist from junior Caitlin Baker. The Cardinals tied the score with 17:11 left in the half on a score from Hayley Wright, but UMW answered just 17 seconds later as sophomore Courtney Rampey scored on a Steele pass, which proved to be the game winner.

Mary Washington held a 14-13 edge in shots, and Catholic held a 9-4 advantage on penalty corners. UMW goalie Claire Gianelle made eight saves for the Eagles, while Megan Comunale had nine stops for the Cardinals. UMW's win over the Cardinals was their first in four meetings, dating back to 2008.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they visit Frostburg State University at 5:00 p.m. in Capital Athletic Conference play.
