#9 UMW Field Hockey Blanks York in CAC Opener, 3-0

The ninth-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team blanked York College of Pa., 3-0, on Saturday in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener. The Eagles improve to 8-0 on the season.

The Eagles led, 1-0, at halftime after senior Lisa Charney scored on a penalty corner assisted by Florence George with 20 minutes left in the first stanza. In the second, freshman Hayley Kane score unassisted off a rebound with 31 minutes left, and freshman Jenna Steele scored on a breakaway with six minutes left to cap the scoring.

UMW led in shots, 17-12, and in penalty corners, 11-8. Senior Claire Gianelle had five saves in gaining the shutout in goal for UMW, with freshman Hunter Causey adding a defensive save. York's Alanna Curtis had eight stops for York.

The Eagles will face their second top-10 ranked opponent on Tuesday, as the Eagles welcome seventh-ranked Catholic University at 4:30 p.m. UMW is 2-0 against ranked teams this season.
