Balanced Attack Leads UMW Field Hockey Past McDaniel, 5-3

Five different players scored goals in a balanced effort as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated McDaniel College, 5-3, on Sunday at the Battleground. UMW improves to 5-0 on the season.

The Eagles erupted for three goals in a 2:23 span midway through the first half to take charge. Sophomore Amy Abernathy scored unassisted with 15:55 remaining, and Florence George upped the score to 2-0 just 51 seconds later on a Haley Kane assist. Caitlin Baker scored with 13:32 remaining unassisted to give the Eagles a 3-0 halftime advantage.

In the second, McDaniel scored their first goal five minutes into play, but UMW answered with goals from freshmen Jenna Steele on a Baker assist with 20 minutes left and Nicole Guinn on an Abernathy feed with 12 minutes left.

McDaniel scored twice late to cut the deficit to two. The Eagles led in shots, 20-11, and each team had 12 penalty corners. Claire Gianelle had seven saves for Mary Washington, allowing no goals in 35 minutes.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday at 4:00 pm at Randolph-Macon College.
