UMW Field Hockey Rushes Past Bridgewater Late, 3-0

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team erupted for three second half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over Bridgewater College on Thursday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 3-0 on the season.

After a scoreless first half in which UMW led in shots, 8-3, the Eagles netted their first goal with 23 minutes remaining in the second on a penlty stroke by senior Lisa Charney. The Eagles upped the lead to 2-0 on an unassisted goal by freshman Jenna Steele with 15 minutes remaining. Sophomore Amy Abernathy capped the scoring with an unassisted goal with four minutes left.

The Eagles led in shots for the day, 27-6, and UMW held a 12-3 advantage in penalty corners. Senior Claire Gianelle had two saves in the first half and sophomore Emily Badis added two in the second half in the UMW goal, while Jessica Balsano had 16 saves for Bridgewater.

"We struggled in the first half but we showed determination in the second half to come together and leave with a win", said UMW head Coach Lindsey Elliott. Mary Washington will return to action on Saturday when they host seventh-ranked Lynchburg College at 2:00 p.m.
