UMW's Charney, Back, and Bednarcik Named CAC Athletes of the Week

FIELD HOCKEY
Mary Washington senior midfielder LISA CHARNEY (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) was selected as the CAC Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Week while Wesley senior GK LIZ GROOM (Bear, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) was selected as the CAC Field Hockey Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 15, 2012.
Charney is the CAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after rallying the seventh-ranked Eagles from a 2-0 deficit to a 3-2 win over top-ranked Salisbury - UMW’s first over the Gulls since 2001.  Charney scored twice, including the game-winner with less than two minutes left, as the seventh-ranked Eagles bounced back from a 2-0 deficit with three goals in the last 14 minutes to get the win.  The UMW senior also scored the game-tying goal late in the first half to erase a 1-0 Johns Hopkins lead in a 4-2 win at JHU.
Groom is the CAC Defensive Player of the Week after keeping the Wolverines undefeated in the CAC with an overtime victory over York, then playing a strong game in the cage against ninth-ranked Christopher Newport.  Groom had eight saves in 76 minutes against York, then had seven more stops against CNU.

MEN’S SOCCER
Wesley senior forward JOSH CHELLEH (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) was selected as the CAC Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week while Mary Washington sophomore goalie TYLER BACK (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and York junior defender AARON BEALE (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) were picked as the CAC Men’s Soccer Co-Defensive Players of the Week for Oct. 15, 2012.
Chelleh was named the CAC Offensive Player of the Week award winner after leading the Wolverines to their first two-game win streak of the season.  Chelleh scored the insurance goal midway through the second half in Wesley’s mid-week non-conference victory over Centenary (N.J.).  In Saturday’s CAC win at Marymount, which kept the Wolverines alive in the chase for a conference playoff berth, Chelleh assisted on the game-winning goal and added an insurance tally after gaining a late-game steal just outside the MU penalty area.
Back was selected as the CAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for the second-straight week, and third time this season, after recording two more shutouts, raising his total to eight in 2012.  He registered 11 saves on 30 shots in the two matches, including a 1-0 win against Frostburg State that handed the Bobcats their first setback of the season.
Beale was selected as the CAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week for spearheading a pair of Spartan shutouts this week.  Beale led a defensive unit that allowed only three shots on goal (four total) in a mid-week non-conference victory over Gettysburg.  In Saturday’s CAC win at St. Mary’s, the hosts managed just two shots on goal, in part thanks to YCP’s ball control and swarming defense.

WOMEN’S SOCCER
Mary Washington freshman forward JESSICA BEDNARCIK (Thornton, Pa./Bayard Rustin) was named the CAC Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week while York senior defender CAITLIN AVERSA (Severna Park, Md./Archbishop Spalding) was selected as the CAC Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Oct. 15, 2012.
Bednarcik was selected as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season after scoring three times within a seven-minute span midway through the first half to erase a 1-0 deficit and lead the Eagles to a one-goal win at Marymount.  Bednarcik has 13 goals and 32 points to lead UMW, which only has one loss in 13 outings this season.
