Jones, Rampey Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Va Wesleyan, 8-1


Senior forward Morgan Jones scored two goals and added two assists and freshman Courtney Rampey added a pair of goals to lead the University of Mary Washington to an 8-1 win over Virginia Wesleyan College on Sunday in Fredericksburg. The Eagles improve to 11-3 on the season, while the Marlins fall to 5-6.

Rampey started the scoring with 16:41 remaining in the first half on a Jones assist, and scored again four minutes later on a pass from senior Kaitlyn Ripley. The Marlins closed the gap to 2-1 by halftime.

In the second half, the Eagles pulled away as Jones scored less than five minutes into the half on an assist from Caitlin Baker, and junior Lisa Charney added another on a penalty corner assisted by junior Florence George. Ripley scored on an assist from Jones with 18 minutes left, and UMW upped the lead to 6-1 when freshman Christine Downie deflected Charney's shot on a corner with 15:45 to go.

Sophomore Brenna Hill and Jones added goals in the 58th and 63rd minutes to cap the scoring. The Eagles led in shots, 20-5, and in penalty corners, 14-2. UMW goalkeeper Claire Gianelle made two saves in 53 minutes and freshman Emily Badis had one stop in 17 minutes, while Kirsten Olsen had nine saves for VWC.

The Eagles will return to action on Tuesday night when they visit Washington College at 7:00 p.m.
