George Leads #18 UMW Field Hockey Past #15 CNU in Overtime

Junior midfielder Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) scored a pair of goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lead the 18th ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-2 win over 15th ranked Christopher Newport University on Wednesday in Fredericksburg. The Eagles improve to 10-3 on the season, and defeat CNU for the first time since 2004, snapping a six-game losing streak to the Captains.

The Captains opened the scoring with 20 minutes remaining in the half, as Chrissy Kurecki scored unassisted. The Eagles tied the score five minutes before halftime as seniors Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) and Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) hooked up for Ripley's sixth goal of the season.

Christopher Newport scored to take the lead at 2-1 with 18 minutes remaining, but George scored a minute and a half later on a Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) assist to tie the score once again. The teams battled through the last 17 minutes of regulation without a winning score, setting up the extra period.

George capped the scoring with her 11th goal of the season 6:17 into overtime on an assist from Jones. The Eagles held a 17-15 advantage in shots, and each team had 15 penalty corners. Junior Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had 12 saves for the Eagles, while Charney added a defensive save. CNU saw goalie Jamie Dowling with six saves and Breanne Lowe and Allie Hackbarth each adding defensive saves.

The Eagles will return to action on Sunday when they host Virginia Wesleyan College at 2:00 p.m.
