Charney's Eight Points Leads UMW Field Hockey Past Hood, 13-0


Junior midfielder Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) scored two goals and added four assists to pace the 17th-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 13-0 victory over Hood College on Wednesday in Fredericksburg. Sophomore Brenna Hill (McLean, Va., Langley) scored three goals, and three others scored twice in the Eagle attack.

Sophomore Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) opened the scoring on an assist from Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) less than five minutes into the game, and senior Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored on a Baker assist two minutes later to up the lead to 2-0. George scored nine minutes into the game, and Hill and Charney followed within the span of a minte midway through the half to advance the lead to 5-0 by halftime.

The Eagles wasted little time in starting the second half, as senior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) scored on a Charney assist just 16 seconds into the second frame. Jones scored her second goal of the game less than two minutes later from Charney, and Baker and George teamed up for another goal 3:20 into the second half.

George scored again five minutes into the half, and Charney added another goal less than 30 seconds later to up the lead to 11-0, and Hill scored twice to cap the scoring at 13-0.

The Eagles led in shots, 36-3, and in corners, 17-1. The Eagles used four goalies, with Emily Badis (Kennett Square, Pa., Kennett) making two saves and Katie Gerbes (Forest Hill, Md., Fallston) making one.

Mary Washington will host undefeated and top-ranked Salisbury University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
