#12 UMW Field Hockey Falls at Wesley in Penalty Strokes, 4-3

In a rematch of last year's Capital Athletic Conference title game, Wesley College reversed the decision in a 4-3 victory over \#12 University of Mary Washington in penalty strokes. The Eagles see their five game win streak snapped and fall to 5-1 on the year.

The Eagles, as they have done in every game this season, fell behind early, as the Wolverines opened the scoring less than nine minutes into the game. UMW tied the score on a Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) goal 10 minutes later, which came via a Maura Flynn (Ridley Park, Pa., Ridley) assist. After Wesley regained the lead at 2-1, Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) tied the score again on a Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) assist with 10 minutes until halftime.

Wesley took the lead at 3-2 less than three minutes later, and held that lead for thirty minutes. That is when UMW's Courtney Rampey (Fredericksburg, Va., Courtland) scored on a Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) assist to knot the score at three. From there, both teams battled without a score through the end of regulation and two overtimes. UMW outshot the hosts, 11-0, in the first extra period, but could not find a goal.

Mary Washington led in shots, 43-25, and had 16 penalty corners to 12 for Wesley. Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had 11 saves, with Charney and Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) adding defensive saves for the Eagles, while Elizabeth Groom had 23 saves for Wesley, who also had three defensive saves.

The Eagles will return to action on Sunday when they host Randolph-Macon College at 1:00 p.m.
