Charney's Hat Trick Leads UMW Field Hockey Past W&L, 7-1

Junior midfielder Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax) scored three goals and junior midfielder Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) added three assists to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 7-1 victory over Washington & Lee University on Friday evening in Fredericksburg. Senior Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored once and added two assists for the Eagles, who improve to 3-0 on the season, all against opponents they lost to a year ago.

The Generals scored first in the game, as Iziar Moure scored on the first shot of the game by either team, with 31:13 left in the first half. The Eagles tied the score on a penalty corner, as George set up Charney with 15 minutes remaining in the half.

UMW took the lead for good four minutes later, as George fed Charney on another corner, and Jones scored on a corner with six minutes left in the half. Sophomore Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) scored unassisted with 1:09 left in the half to cap the first half scoring.

Four minutes into the second half, senior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) scored on a Jones assist to up the lead to 5-1, and sophomore Brenna Hill (McLean, Va., Langley) scored her first goal of the season on a Jones pass with 15 minutes left. Charney capped the scoring in the final seconds on an Amy Stevens (Annandale, Va., Annandale) assist.

The Eagles led in shots, 27-5, and in corners, 19-6. Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had one save and Emily Badis (Kennett Square, Pa., Kennett) one save for UMW, who will host Rhodes College on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
