UMW Field Hockey Tops #5 Lebanon Valley, 5-2


The University of Mary Washington field hockey team scored four goals in the final seven minutes of the first half in defeating their second straight nationally ranked opponent to start the season, topping \#5 Lebanon Valley College, 5-2, on Saturday in Fredericksburg. The Eagles improve to 3-12 all-time against the Flying Dutchmen.

Lebanon Valley opened the scoring on a goal by Jocelyn Novak 8:33 into the game. The Eagles tied the score at one with 15 minutes remaining on an unassisted score from junior Lisa Charney (Fairfax, Va., Fairfax). Six minutes later, the Eagles took the lead for good, as Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored on an assist from Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne). Sophomore Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) scored the eventual game winner with 4:45 left in the half, and Brenna Hill (McLean, Va., Langley) scored on a Charney assist with 1:09 to play. George scored as time expired on a penalty corner assisted by Charney.

LVC scored the lone goal in the second half, but UMW had enough for just its third win ever over the Flying Dutchmen. The Eagles led in shots, 24-18, and had six corners to 10 for Lebanon Valley. Junior Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had nine saves for the Eagles, while LVC saw Christine Poletti have 13 saves.

The Eagles will host Bridgewater College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
