Seventh-ranked Salisbury University erupted for three second half scores to top the University of Mary Washington, 4-1, in the first round of the NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament on Wednesday in Salisbury. The Eagles' season closes with a 14-8 record.
The Sea Gulls opened the scoring on a goal by Courtney Webster 12 minutes into play when she scored on a rebound of a Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) save. The Eagles would tie the score two minutes before halftime however, as junior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) scored on a Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) assist.
Salisbury scored ten minutes into the second half on a penalty corner, and added two scores in the final 10 minutes for the 4-1 margin. The Sea Gulls outshot the Eagles, 19-2, and had a 16-5 lead in penalty corners.
Senior Bowdren had 12 saves in cage for Mary Washington, while Anna Cooke had one stop for Salisbury.
