Ripley, Jones Pace UMW Field Hockey Past Stevenson in CAC 1st Round

Junior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) scored a pair of goals and junior forward Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) added a goal and an assist to pace the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Stevenson University in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles will advance to the CAC semifinals on Wednesday at St. Mary's College.

The Eagles jumped ahead quickly, as Jones scored unassisted off of a defensive save with 30:57 remaining. Ripley upped the lead to 2-0 ten minutes later on an assist from freshman Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean)'s pass from the left. UMW led, 2-0, at halftime.

Sophomore MacKenzie Sloan (Earlysville, Va., Albemarle) upped the lead to 3-0 with the eventual game winner with 28 minutes left in the second half on a Morgan Jones redirected shot. After Stevenson ruined the shutout with 24 minutes remaining, the Eagles answered right back less than a minute later, as Ripley scored when her shot deflected in off the Mustang defense.

The Eagles led in shots, 25-6, and in penalty corners, 13-4. Senior Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had two saves, while Kara Zimmerman had 16 saves for Stevenson.

UMW will visit St. Mary's on Wednesday in the CAC semifinals. The Eagles fell to the Seahawks, 1-0, two weeks ago, despite outshooting SMC, 9-3.
