Jones, Sloan Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Randolph-Macon


Junior forward Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored two goals and sophomore MacKenzie Sloan (Earlysville, Va., Albemarle) added a pair of assists to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-2 victory at Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles close the regular season with a record of 11-7.

Jones got the Eagles on the board at the start, scoring unassisted with 33:48 remaining in the first half. Junior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) scored on a Sloan assist 11 minutes later, and UMW upped the lead to 3-0 when Jones scored on a loan pass with 16 minutes left in the half. Randolph-Macon capped the first half scoring to cut the intermission deficit to 3-1.

UMW freshman Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) scored unassisted with six minutes remaining to return the margin to three goals, but the Yellow Jackets tallied a second goal in the final two minutes to trim the final score to 4-2.

The Eagles led in shots, 27-18, and had 14 penalty corners to seven for the hosts. Senior Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had 10 saves and Heidi Sheehan (Scituate, Mass., Scituate) added a defensive save for UMW.

UMW will host Stevenson University on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in the first round of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament,
