"MoJo" Leads UMW Field Hockey Past York, 5-2



Junior forward Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored her first career hat trick to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-2 victory over York College of Pa. in Capital Athletic Conference action on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 9-6 overall and 4-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Eagles jumped on the scoreboard early, as junior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) scored on a Heidi Sheehan (Scituate, Mass., Scituate) assist at 29:22 remaining. Four minutes later, Jones scored her first goal of the day on a Ripley assist. Senior Kristen Haynor (Oakton, Va., James Madison) capped the first half scoring with a penalty stroke goal with 14 minutes remaining.

Jones upped the Eagle lead to 4-0 with her second goal with 29:22 left in the second half on another Ripley pass. York's Brittany Simmons scored on a penalty stroke with 20 minutes remaining, but Jones found the cage again three minutes later to up the Eagle lead to 5-1. Simmons scored in the final minutes for York to cut the final to 5-2.

Mary Washington outshot York, 14-6, and York had a 15-8 edge in penalty corners. Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had one save in 51 minutes and Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) had none in 19 minutes in the Eagle goal.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Stevenson University at 3:30 p.m.
