UMW Field Hockey Falls at Washington & Lee, 4-2

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision at Washington & Lee University on Sunday to fall to 5-5 on the season.

The Eagles trailed, 2-0, at halftime and trailed 3-0 before attaining their first goal, scored by senior Heidi Sheehan (Scituate, Mass., Scituate) with 19 minutes remaining on an assist from freshman Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean). Baker cut the deficit to 3-2 on an assist from junior Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) with 10 minutes remaining, but the Generals added a late insurance goal for the two-goal win.

The Eagles held a 20-11 advantage in shotsand had 15 penalty corners to just one for W&L. Caroline Sutherland had seven saves for Washington & Lee, while Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had one save in 21:30 and Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) added three saves in 48:30 for UMW.

Mary Washington will host Washington (Md.) College on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
