UMW Field Hockey Blanks Frostburg State, 8-0


Junior Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored two goals and added two assists and senior Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) added three scores in leading the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to an 8-0 victory over Frostburg State University on Saturday in Capital Athletic Conference action. The Eagles improve to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in CAC play, while FSU falls to 2-8 and 1-2.

Morgan Jones opened the scoring less than three minutes into play unassisted. Emma Jones upped the lead to 2-0 with 21:48 left on the clock, and freshman Taylor Rotsted (Chesterfield, Va., Matoaca) scored to up the lead to 3-0 three minutes later on a pass from Morgan Jones. Freshman Sarah Rankin (Richmond, Va., James River) gave UMW a 4-0 advantage with 11:29 to go, and Rotsted capped the first half scoring with 5:35 remaining.

In the second frame, Morgan Jones scored with 29:56 remaining on an Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) assist, and Emma Jones scored unassisted one minute later. Emma Jones capped the scoring on a pass from Morgan Jones with 21:07 left.

Mary Washington led in shots, 34-5, and had 13 penalty corners to two for the Bobcats. Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson), Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside), and Katie Gerbes (Forest Hill, Md., Fallston) each combined for the shutout, while Frostburg’s Maggie Edwards had two saves and Kellen Murphy one.

The Eagles return to action on Sunday when they host Eastern Mennonite University at 3:00 p.m.
