Ripley, Baker Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Hood, 6-0

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team saw junior Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) score a pair of goals, and freshman Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean) add a goal and an assist to lead the Eagles past Hood College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Tuesday afternoon in Frederick, Md. The Eagles improve to 2-3 overall and 1-1 in league play.

UMW raced out to a 5-0 halftime advantage. Senior Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) started the scoring less than two minutes into play on a penalty corner, with assists going to Caitlin Baker and Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne). With 31:50 remaining, Ripley scored unassisted to give the Eagles a 2-0 advantage. 

Junior Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) scored unassisted with 10 minutes remaining in the half, and Ripley scored again less than a minute later on an assist from Taylor Rotsted (Chesterfield, Va., Matoaca). Junior Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored again less than a minute after that, with seven minutes left in the half.

Baker capped the scoring with two minutes elapsed in the second half. The Eagles outshot Hood, 48-1, and had 16 penalty corners to one for the Blazers. Three UMW goalkeepers (Chrissy Bowdren, Claire Gianelle, and Katie Gerbes) combined on the shutout without recording a save. 

The Eagles will host Wesley College in a Capital Athletic Conference battle on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
