UMW Field Hockey Falls to #6 Lebanon Valley, 7-3

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team dug itself an early hole and couldn't climb back in a 7-3 loss at 6th ranked Lebanon Valley College on Saturday morning. The Eagles, having played three top-12 opponents on the road to open the season, fall to 1-3 on the season.

Lebanon Valley jumped ahead early, scoring on its first four shots and led, 4-0, after 13 minutes. The Eagles were able to draw to within 5-3 by halftime, as Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford), Caitlin Baker (Falls Church, Va., McLean), and Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) each scored for UMW. Ripley scored on an assist from Jones with 20 minutes remaining, followed by Baker's first college goal two minutes later. Jones scored on an assist from senior Heidi Sheehan (Scituate, Mass., Scituate) two minutes later, and the score remained at 5-3 at intermission.

The Flying Dutchmen netted two second half scores to come away with the 7-3 win.

Lebanon Valley outshot the Eagles, 16-6, and had eight penalty corners to 12 for UMW. Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) made four saves in 57 minutes of relief for Mary Washington's goal. Lebanon Valley had one defensive save.

The Eagles will visit Hood College on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. in a Capital Athletic Conference game.
