Jones, Duffy Pace UMW Field Hockey, 2-1, Past York and Into CAC Championship

Junior forward Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) and sophomore Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) each scored a goal and added an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over York College in the CAC semifinals on Wednesday at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 12-7 overall, and will advance to the CAC Championship on Saturday.

The Eagles were the first to score, as Duffy scored on a Jones assist with 16:05 remaining in the first half. The score remained 1-0 until halftime.

In the second half, York tied the score on a goal from Katie Dawkins with 26:37 remaining in the second half. Dawkins broke through traffic and stole the ball, shooting with one motion for the tying tally. Jones scored the game winner with 15:31 remaining, booming a penalty corner into goal. Duffy started the play on the corner, and freshman Florence George stopped the ball for Jones.

Mary Washington outshot the Spartans, 17-8, and held a 9-8 edge in penalty corners. UMW junior Chrissy Bowdren had six saves, while York's Claire Rekitzke had nine saves.

The Eagles will play Saturday in the CAC Championship at Salisbury University at 2:00 p.m.
