George, Jones Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Roanoke


SALEM, VA - Freshman Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) scored one goal and added two assists and junior Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) added a pair of goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4-0 victory at Roanoke College on Sunday. The Eagles improve to 11-5 on the season.

Jones opened the scoring with 24:24 remaining in the half on a penalty corner assisted by Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) and George. George then pushed the advantage to 2-0 with 10:05 remaining. Jones finished the first half scoring 1:10 later on a penalty corner by George, handing UMW a 3-0 halftime advantage.

With 20 minutes remaining, freshman Amy Stevens (Annandale, Va., Annandale) scored unassisted to cap the scoring. The Eagles outshot the Maroons, 20-6, and had 13 penalty corners to five for Roanoke. UMW goalkeepers Chrissy Bowdren, Claire Gianelle, and Katie Gerbes combined for the shutout,

Mary Washington will next play on Saturday, October 24 when they host second ranked Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m. in a Capital Athletic Conference battle.
