Jones' Three Scores Lead UMW Field Hockey Past Hood

Sophomore forward Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored three goals to pace the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to an 8-1 win over Hood College on Thursday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 8-5 overall, and 4-1 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

The Blazers scored first, with Samantha Liptrap scoring just 30 seconds into play. The Eagles tied the score at one with 15:10 left in the half as Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) scored on a penalty stroke, and UMW took the lead 30 seconds later as Jones scorecd on a Jaci Marshall (Annapolis, Md., Annapolis) assist. UMW led, 2-1, at halftime.

The Eagle offense erupted for six second half scores, with Morgan Jones scoring twice more, Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford) scoring twice,Emma Jones adding a second goal, and Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) and Carleigh Bowler (Fredericksburg, Va., Stafford) netting single goals.

The Eagles outshot Hood, 46-1, and had 13 penalty corners to none for the Blazers. Junior Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) and freshmen Claire Gianelle (Salisbury, Md., Parkside) and Katie Gerbes (Forest Hill, Md., Fallston) split time in UMW's goal. Hood's Anne Marie Hantman had 11 saves.

Mary Washington will visit Virginia Wesleyan College on Saturday at 1:00 in a game played at the Olympic Training Center in Virginia Beach.
