UMW Field Hockey Falls in 2OT at Wesley

The University of Mary Washington field hockey team saw its five game win streak come to an end with a 3-2 double overtime loss at Wesley College in Capital Athletic Conference action on Sunday. UMW falls to 5-2 on the season.

The Eagles took the lead just before halftime, as freshman Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) scored unassisted with 32 seconds remaining in the half. UMW upped the lead to 2-0 on a penalty corner less than two minutes into the second half on a score by junior Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) on assists from George and Jackie Tait (Fredericksburg, Va., Stafford).

Three minutes later, Wesley cut the deficit to 2-1 on a goal from Erin Bailey, and Bailey knotted the score at two with 6:42 to play. Brooke Tadlock scored the game winner in the second extra frame.

Wesley outshot the Eagles, 29-20, and had 26 penalty corners to 13 for UMW. Eagle goalie Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) played an outstanding game with 20 saves. Sarah Johnson had 11 saves for Wesley.

Mary Washington will visit Catholic University on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.
