UMW Field Hockey Tops St. Mary's, 3-1, in CAC Clash

Sophomore Morgan Jones (Williamsburg, Va., Walsingham Academy) scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 3-1 victory at St. Mary's College on Wednesday in a Capital Athletic Conference clash in St. Mary's City. The Eagles, winners of four straight, improve to 4-1 on the season.

Jones put the Eagles on the scoreboard with 13:32 left in the first half, as sophomore Carleigh Bowler (Fredericksburg, Va., Stafford) took a carom off the SMC goalie's pads and redirected to Jones, who found the cage. Jones scored again with 32 seconds remaining in the first half unassisted.

Freshman Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) capped the scoring for the Eagles nine minutes into the second half on an assist from junior Jackie Tait. SMC scored with six and a half minutes remaining to prevent the shutout.

The Eagles outshot the Seahawks, 13-9, while SMC had 11 corners to six for the Eagles. UMW junior Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) had four saves for the Eagles, while Hillary Wall had five stops for SMC.

Mary Washington will visit Dickinson College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m.
