UMW Field Hockey Tops York, 2-1, in CAC Opener



Sophomore midfielder Kaitlyn Ripley scored unassisted with 14 minutes remaining in the second half to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team past York College, 2-1, in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener in York on Saturday. UMW improves to 3-1 on the season, and have won three straight.

Mary Washington opened the scoring with 15:38 left in the first half, as freshman MacKenzie Sloan scored unassisted off an Eagle penalty corner opportunity. York answered just before halftime, as Katie Dawkins scored on an assist from Megan Spangler with 3:39 left before intermission.

The Eagles scored the lone goal of the second half, with Ripley providing the game winner with a hard shot from the right that caromed into the far corner of goal.

York held a 10-9 edge in shots, and had 11 penalty corners to five for UMW. Eagle junior goalie Chrissy Bowdren had four saves, while Claire Rekitzke had five stops for York.

The Eagles will return to action on Wednesday when they visit CAC foe St. Mary's College at 4:00 p.m.
