Jones, Duffy Pace UMW Field Hockey Past Bridgewater


Junior forward Emma Jones (Yorktown, Va., York) and sophomore forward Erin Duffy (Fairfax, Va., Robinson) each scored a pair of goals to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team past Bridgewater College, 5-0, on Thursday. UMW improves to 2-1 on the season, while Bridgewater falls to 2-1.

Jones opened the scoring 12 minutes into play unassisted and freshman Florence George (Virginia Beach, Va., Princess Anne) upped the lead to 2-0 13 minutes later. Duffy upped the lead to 3-0 with less than five minutes left in the half on a pass from Kaitlyn Ripley (Stafford, Va., Stafford).

The second half saw Duffy score again three minutes into play unassisted. Jones capped the scoring with 31 minutes remaining unassisted. The Eagles outshot Bridgewater, 20-1, and had nine penalty corners to three for BC. 

Junior UMW goalie Chrissy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va., Robinson) made one save in sharing the shutout with freshman Katie Gerbes. Bridgewater saw Taylor Waddell and Elizabeth Sullivan each make five saves in goal.

Mary Washington will visit York College of Pa. on Saturday in the Capital Athletic Conference opener at 1:00 p.m.
