1994 Mary Washington College Field Hockey Season in Review

In many programs, the graduation loss of five First Team All-Conference seniors - including two First Team All-Americans - would result in a struggle the following season. But an established MWC program filled in the gaps quite nicely in 1994, reaching the NCAA Division III Tournament for the third time in four years in a 13-5-1 campaign.

MWC shut out 11 opponents in '94,while also defeating nationally-ranked teams in Salisbury State and Eastern Mennonite. like in the 1993 NCAA-finalist season in which the Eagles blanked a school-record 18 opponents in a 22-2 season, defense keyed the overall success. Two senior defenders were named National All-Americans. Michelle O'Hanlon (Fairfax, VA) was selected to the First Team, while also being tabbed Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) Player of the Year. The four-time All-CAC choice led MWC in goals with six, and had two assists for 14 points. Third-Team All-American Bridget Rooney (Stafford,VA) was the lead rusher on an Eagle penalty-corner unit which did not allow a goal in 100 chances. Rooney was selected All-CAC for the third straight time.

Fellow defenders Eliza Huber (Doylestown, PA) and Carin Gsellman Qr./Reston, VA) were also standouts. Huber made First-Team All-CAC and Second-Team All-Region, while Gsellman paced MWC with six assists. Another anchor for the back line was goaltender Stephanie Lowe (San Francisco, CA), who posted 11 shutouts with a save percentage of .915 en route to First-Team All-CAC and Second-Team All-Region honors. In three years, Lowe has a school record 31 shutouts with a save percentage of .930.

Offensively, MWC welcomes back several talented performers from a balanced attack. First team All-CAC forward Danielle Oleson (So./Fredericksburg, VA) was the Eagles' top scorer with 15 points (five goals/five assists). Second Team All-CAC forward Meredith Ierley (Manasquan, NJ) had four goals and five assists for 13 points to rank third among MWC scorers, while junior forwards Suzy Chenault (Williamsburg, VA) and Amy Mann (Williamsburg, VA) had nine (4g/1a) and seven (3g/1a) points, respectively. At link, Tracey King (Fairfax, VA) added 12 points (5g/ 2a), including the game-winning goal against Eastern Mennonite. Other top performers were forwards Wendy Baylor (So./Virginia Beach, VA) and Liza Barber (So./Weekapaug, RI), link Molly Marshall (Fr./Bel Air, MD) and midfielders Katie Burke (Fr./ Springfield, VA), Charlotte Cockrell (So./Silver Spring, MD) and Angie Saulsbury (Fr./Ridgely, MD).
