1979 Mary Washington College Field Hockey Season in Review

Two wins and a tie in the final regular season games raised MWC's record to 5-9-1 after a mid-season scoring slump. The year began with an 11-0 win over Randolph Macon College but five consecutive losses erased the satisfaction of that record setting victory. Tough games were the order of the season for the Blue Tide. In bitter cold, the team chugged past Catholic University for an overtime win.

In a driving rainstorm, American University won a shortened contest over MWC. The Tide led Division I state champ William and Mary 1-0 before the Indians regained their scoring touch in the second half. In the Division III state tournament, Bridgewater was taken into overtime before they registered their second win of the year over MWC. The year was a rebui Iding one for Mary Washington.

Eleven starters from 1978's team departed, while only two seniors graduate in 1979. In the fall of 1980, leading career scorer Jenny Utz will return for her third season along with every other scorer of the 1979 season. Inju ry forced many players to find playing time in 1979. Although the result was a struggle in 1979, it bodes well for 1980 and beyond. Finesse and skill were the assets of the young team and a 2.5 goals per game average was the outcome.
