DeSmit, Frano, Marino Named UMW Scholar-Athletes of the Year

University of Mary Washington seniors Megan DeSmit and Marina Frano have been named as the 2012 UMW Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, while senior Chris Marino was named as the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

DeSmit advanced to the NCAA Division III Swimming Championships in March, gaining top-25 performances in three events after gaining multiple all-conference honors at the CAC Championships in February. The holder of four conference and school records, DeSmit is a biology major and has been named to the Prsident's list, Dean's list, and has gained academic all-conference and academic All-America honors every year. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Mortar board, Chi Beta Phi, Alpha Phi Sigma, and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

Frano advanced to the regional and zone championships in equestrian in each of the past two years, serving as one of the top riders in the program. A biology major, Frano is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Chi Beta Phi, Phi Beta Kappa, Dean's List, and President's List. She has also filled much of her time with volunteer activities, including fundraising for and participating in Relay for Life. In the summer of 2011, Marina volunteered at Tacketts Mill Veterinarian Hospital, furthering her goals in her biology major.

Marino has been an integral member of the cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field teams at UMW for four years. An English major, Marino has been an all-conference performer in all three sports, and been a team captain. Academically, he has been a member of the UMW and Capital Athletic Conference honor roll every year.

2012 marks the 22nd year that UMW has awarded the Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards.
