UMW Baseball Downs Stockton, 14-5

Behind an offensive explosion in the first and eighth innings, the Mary Washington baseball team downed Stockton, 14-5, in Galloway, N.J. on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first when Ty Lowe reached on a throwing error, scoring the first run of the game. Then, Tommy Martinez broke the inning open with a grand slam the other way to right field to put the Eagles up, 5-0.

Stockton got two runs back in the bottom half of the inning, but the Eagles scored two more when Jacob Christenbury scored on a wild pitch, then Lowe ripped an RBI single.  In the fifth, Alex Purgason reached on an error that scored Martinez, pushing the score to 8-2.

In the seventh, George Rizzo reached on a fielder's choice that scored Oliver Martin, then in the eighth, the Eagles scored five more runs. It began with Oliver Martin's two-RBI single, then Rizzo tripled three runs home to push the Eagles lead to 14-2.

Justin Ritz recorded the victory, going five innings and allowing two runs to move to 3-2 on the season. Brendan McComber worked a scoreless sixth and seventh, while Griffin Graham pitched a run-less eighth.

The Eagles are back in action on Friday afternoon as they take a trip to Newport News, Va. to take on Salisbury in the Coast-to-Coast semifinal at 11 a.m. The winner takes on Christopher Newport at 3 p.m. in the C2C Championship.
