UMW Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader Against Mt. St. Vincent

The Mary Washington baseball team swept its doubleheader with Mt. St. Vincent on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

Game 1 - Eagles win - 6-1

UMW used Gavin Riley's 6.2 innings of two-hit ball to propel itself to the Game 1 victory as the junior struck out three and walked just two.

The Eagles got on the board in the second inning with Jacob Christenbury's bases-loaded walk. Then in the fifth, Alex Purgason beat out a potential double play ground ball to drive in the Eagles second run of the game.

Later in the inning with two outs and runnners on the corners, Purgason took off for second as he drew a throw from the Dolphins catcher, which allowed Tommy Martinez to swipe home.

In the sixth, Christenbury recorded a sac fly to drive in Oliver Martin -- then Burke Steifman recorded a single for the Eagles fifth run of the day in the sixth.

And finally, Ryan Schwarz recorded an RBI single to put the Eagles up 6-0 and seal the victory.

Game 2 - Eagles win - 3-1

In a low scoring affair, the Eagles used Bobby Ayscue's third inning homer to push them out to a 1-0 lead as Gabe Delgado went five scoreless for the Eagles.

Delgado struck out eight in his dominating five innings as he departed with a 1-0 lead intact. In the sixth, the Dolphins would tie the score at one, but it was UMW who would prevail in the late innings.

In the seventh, the Eagles would re-claim the lead with Ty Lowe's sac fly -- then add another on Schwarz's sac fly in the eighth.

Using his fastball in the eighth and ninth, Connor Hassan would record his third save of the season.

The Eagles are back in action at Bridgewater on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
