UMW Baseball Can't Complete Comeback Against John Carroll

The Mary Washington baseball team (14-4) fell behind to John Carroll early and almost recovered in a 10-9 loss in Fredericksburg, Va. on Sunday afternoon.

The Eagles trailed by three after the first inning and then punched back with a run of their own in the second with Alex Purgason's sac fly to left field that drove in Ty Lowe, who doubled.

The Blue Streaks would go on to score four more runs in the fourth and trailed 7-1 heading into the bottom half of the fourth. The Eagles would counter with a run in the fourth with Noah Roots's sac fly that drove in Phillip Woodard.

John Carroll scored another run in the fifth, but again the Eagles chipped away with two more runs in the bottom half. With the bases-loaded and two outs, Roots singled a pair of runners to cut into the lead, 8-4.

In the eighth, the Blue Streaks scored again -- twice. However, Mary Washington almost came all the way back with a five-run eighth.

Trailing 10-4 to begin the inning, the scoring got started with Burke Stiefman's RBI single with the bases-loaded, then Bobby Ayscue did the same as he drove in a pair. And with runners on the corners, Lowe drove a triple into the right-center field gap as he plated both Steifman and Ayscue to chip the lead down to one. But that's as close as the Eagles got as Lowe was cut down at the plate trying to score on an inside-the-park home run.

After a scoreless top of the ninth, Mary Washington loaded the bases in the bottom half, but couldn't push those two final runs across.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday with a matchup at Eastern Mennonite.
