UMW Baseball Wins a Thriller Over Eastern Mennonite, 10-9

Trailing by five in the bottom of the sixth, the Mary Washington baseball team (12-3) stormed all the way back to down Eastern Mennonite, 10-9, in Fredericksburg, Va. on Wednesday afternoon.

The Eagles collected 10 hits and 13 walks in the victory as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Burke Steifman and Bobby Ayscue recorded RBI singles.

The Royals got one back in the second before tying it with two runs in the fourth. In the fifth, the Eagles took the lead on a Mike Dennis sac fly, but then in the sixth, Eastern Mennonite posted six runs to go up 9-4.

UMW scored another run in the sixth to crawl a little closer, 9-4. Jackson Beale then came in during the seventh inning and shut the door on the Royals for the final three innings for the victory.

But the Eagles comeback wouldn't start until the eighth inning when Ayscue worked a walk to open the frame. With an out, Tommy Martinez singled and Charlie Grove worked a walk and that's when Alex Purgason delivered a bases-clearing double as the Eagles came with a run, 9-8. Jacob Christenbury then singled Purgason home to tie the game and finally, Ryan Schwarz picked up a base knock and drove in Christenbury with a single then advanced to third on a throwing error.

UMW used six pitchers in the victory as Beale picked up the win in relief, throwing three shutout innings, which included a strikeout.

The Eagles are back in action this weekend with a matchup against John Carroll.
