UMW Baseball Falls To N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday

The Mary Washington baseball team fell to N.C. Wesleyan on Sunday in Kodak, Tenn., 7-3, after getting a strong start from starting pitcher Gavin Riley.

Riley, who's gone at least five innings in each of his three previous starts, yielded just one run in 5 and 2/3 innings on Sunday afternoon, putting the Eagles in solid position to come away with a victory, but he was matched pitch-for-pitch by the Battling Bishops' Cord Butler, who went eight strong.

The Eagles fell behind by one in the third before tying it with Ryan Schwarz's RBI single in the fifth inning.

But UMW fell behind for good in the seventh when N.C. Wesleyan posted four runs and then two more in the ninth to go up, 7-1.

The Eagles, though, didn't go down without a fight as Oliver Martin was hit-by-a-pitch to score Charlie Grove, which was then followed by Jacob Christenbury's RBI fielder's choice.

The Eagles are back in action on Tuesday with a matchup against William Peace in Cary, N.C.
