UMW Baseball Improves to 7-0 with Sweep Over Westminster (Pa.)

The Mary Washington baseball team improved to 7-0 on Sunday afternoon with a series sweep over Westminster (Pa.) in Fredericksburg, Va. with a nail-biting final few innings, 4-1.

The Eagles are the one of only five baseball teams in NCAA Division III baseball to start the season 7-0 as of Feb. 25.

UMW got instant offense when Ty Lowe singled home Ryan Schwarz to give the Eagles' a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. In the fourth, Luke Guerzon doubled home George Rizzo, while Schwarz followed with an RBI double of his own to extend the lead to 3-0.

In the fifth, the Titans scored their lone run of the day, but UMW got a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Rizzo doubled home Bobby Ayscue.

Mary Washington used six innings of one-run ball from Gavin Riley to propel them to the victory, while Ryan Northup proceeded to get the next four outs, pitching into the eighth. But that's when it got tense as Northup loaded the bases with an out in the eighth inning.

That's when freshman lefty Connor Hassan blew heaters by the final two hitters of the inning to record two punchouts and send the Eagles into the home half of the eighth with their three-run lead intact. Hassan then recorded his first career save by recording the final three outs in the ninth.

The Eagles are back in action next weekend as they travel down to the Smokies Stadium in Kodak, Tenn. for three games with action against Piedmont (Friday), Ferrum (Saturday), and N.C. Wesleyan (Sunday).
