UMW Baseball Sweeps Weekend With Walk-off Win Over Washington College

In dramatic fashion, the Mary Washington baseball team walked-off Washington College on Sunday afternoon as it turned a heart-breaker into celebration in a 6-5 win in Fredericksburg, Va.

The Eagles took a 5-1 lead in the bottom of the second, thanks to three consecutive RBI singles via Oliver Martin, Jacob Christenbury and Ryan Schwarz to put the Eagles up 3-1. Ty Lowe -- who would later pitch in the ninth -- followed with a two-run single that gave UMW its four-run lead.

Gavin Riley got the start for the Eagles, going five innings in a second consecutive outing as he yielded just two runs and struck out six hitters in the process. Gabe Delgado worked the sixth inning, allowing a run, while striking out a batter.

Mary Washington led by two runs when Ryan Northup trekked out for the seventh inning as he shut down the Washington bats with two innings of shutout ball. The Eagles allowed two runs in the ninth, but it was Lowe who made up for it with his bat.

With runners on first and second, Lowe grounded a ball to second base, the second baseman fired to first for the second out of the inning, all while Lowe busted it down the line. He would've beat the errant throw -- had it be on-line -- but the throw from the shortstop zipped past the Washington first baseman and allowed Schwarz to score from second and give the Eagles the victory.

Mary Washington is back in action next weekend with a three-game series with Westminster (Pa.) -- it hosts a Saturday doubleheader with first pitches at 11 a.m. and 2:15 p.m.
