UMW Baseball Splits Saturday Twinbill With John Carroll

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split its Saturday doubleheader with John Carroll University at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium, falling in the opener, 13-7, before winning game two, 15-2. UMW moves to 15-7 on the season.

The Eagles dug a deep hole in game one, as the Blue Streaks scored three in the third, six in the fourth, and one in the fifth. UMW scored one in the fourth, as Jonathan Sedmak and Ty Lowe connected for back-to-back doubles.

The Eagles saw John Carroll score two in the eighth, before erupting for six runs in the eighth. Noah Roots led off with a single, and moved to third on a hit from Burke Steifman. Jacob Christenbury provided an RBI single, and Sedmak and Lowe followed with RBI singles before Bobby Ayscue cleared the bases with a two-run triple. Andrew Gerhart walked before Roots added an RBI single.

Roots had three hits, while Sedmak and Lowe each singled and doubled to lead the offense.

Brendan McComber took the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings, with four walks and four strikeouts.

In the second game, the Eagle bats awoke in a big way, for 15 runs in a 15-2 victory. The Eagles scored two in the second, three in the third and fourth, and one each in the fifth and seventh before plating five in the eighth.

Tim Blankenship singled, doubled, walked twice, and drove in four runs, while Bobby Ayscue added a three-run homer. Ryan Schwarz added a pair of hits.

Justin Ritz gained the win, allowing no runs in six innings on five hits, with one walk and four strikeouts.

The two teams will battle again on Sunday at noon.
