UMW Baseball Falls to Castleton, 7-3, on Friday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team fell to Castleton University, 7-3, on Friday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles drop to 4-1.

Castleton got off to a hot start as the first pitch and first at-bat went for a homerun. The Eagles would be held in check until the bottom of the 3rd inning when Xavier Herring touched home plate after Herring singled, then advanced to third. Herring then scored when Jonathan Sedmak singled to left field.

The next two runs came from the Eagles in the bottom of the 6th, when Bobby Ayscue and Ty Lowe scored, both off of two doubles to left field. The Spartans would go on a 4-run swing in the top of the 7th, bring the score to 5-3. The Eagles would go scoreless the rest of the game, while the Spartans would collect two more runs in the top of the 9th to seal the match.

Justin Ritz is credited with the loss, allowing four hits and two runs in five innings, with two walks and nine strikeouts. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Juniata College at 1:00 p.m.
