Steifman's Walkoff Single Lifts UMW Baseball Past FDU Florham, 7-6, on Monday

Freshman third baseman Burke Steifman provided a walkoff single to plate the winning run in a 7-6 victory for the University of Mary Washington baseball team over Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium on Monday. The Eagles improve to 10-6 on the season.

Mary Washington opened the scoring with a run in the first, as Owen Reilly singled with two outs and scored on a double from Ty Lowe. FDU-Florham scored a pair of runs in the second to grab the lead, but sophomore Noah Roots connected for a solo home run in the third to tie the score at 2-2.

UMW raced ahead in the fifth with two runs. Steifman walked, moved to second on a bunt, and to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a Roots sacrifice fly. Bobby Ayscue scored on a Reilly double.

The Eagles added two in the seventh, as Steifman and Jacob Christenbury each singled and scored on a Roots double. The Devils responded with one run in the eighth and three in the ninth, but the Eagles regained the lead right away, as Chris Rubano led off with a double down the right field line, and Steifman followed with the game winner on a single to center field.

Roots led the Eagles with a double, home run, and four RBI, while Reilly and Lowe each singled and doubled. Steifman had two single and two runs scored in addition to the game winning RBI.

Lowe pitched the first seven innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits, with no walks and five strikeouts. Erik Parnell gained the win with .1 inning in the top of the ninth, striking out the only hitter he faced.

UMW will be back in action on Tuesday when the Eagles host Bridgewater College at 3:00 p.m.
