UMW Baseball Tops Mary Baldwin, 16-1, on Thursday

Sophomore infielder Alex Purgason ripped a pair of doubles and drove in four runs to lead the University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 16-1 victory over Mary Baldwin University on Thursday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 8-5 on the season.

The Eagles scored three in the first inning, as Purgason was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, scoring Bobby Ayscue. Senior outfielder Norman Holcomb followed with a two-run single, plating Owen Reilly and Ty Lowe.

UMW added five in the third. Once again batting with the bases loaded, Purgason provided a two-run double. Another run crossed when Holcomb followed with an RBI groudout, and Burke Steifman's RBI single scored Purgason. Steifman stole second and third, and scored on an Ayscue RBI single.

In the seventh, the Eagles erupted for eight runs. Luke Guerzon singled home Holcomb, and Nick Ciufredda added a bases-loaded walk to score another. Ryan Schwartz followed with a two-run single, and Purgason followed with a run-producing double. Tim Blankenship ripped a two-run triple off the top of the centerfield wall to cap the scoring.

Purgason doubled twice, scoring two runs and driving in four, while Holcomb singled twice and drove in three, while Guerzon singled twice, scoring one and driving in one.

Sophomore Brendan McComber gained the win, allowing two hits in five scoreless innings, walking two and striking out five.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Juniata Colllege for a noon doubleheader.
