UMW Baseball Tops Stevenson, 7-4, on Friday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team defeated Stevenson University, 7-4, on Friday afternoon at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 2-1 on the season.

Stevenson opened the game with a pair of runs in the first, but UMW got one back in the second, as Nick Ciufredda doubled to lead off, advanced to third on a sacrifice, and scored on a single from Sam Freeborne. Stevenson added one in the third to take a 3-1 lead to the middle innings.

Mary Washington erupted for four runs in the sixth to take the lead for good. Bobby Ayscue was hit by a pitch to open the frame, and Ty Lowe singled, before Noah Roots's bunt eluded the Mustang defense to load the bases. Ciufredda singled to plate two runs, and with two outs Andrew Gearhart doubled home two more.

Stevenson scored once in the seventh, but the Eagles matched it with one in the bottom of the inning, as Jacob Christenbury doubled and scored on a Roots groundout. UMW added another in the eighth on Xavier Herring's RBI single after an Owen Reilly double.

Ciufredda and Gearhart each had a single and double, while Herring had two hits for the Eagle offense. Sophomore Justin Ritz gained the win in relief with 3.2 innings of two-hit ball, with no earned runs and four strikeouts, with no walks.

The Eagles will take on Arcadia University on Saturday at 11:00 a.m.
