UMW Baseball Erupts for 29 Runs in DH Sweep at Southern Va.

The University of Mary Washington baseball team erupted for 29 runs in two games, sweeping a doubleheader at Southern Virginia University, 15-12 and 14-7, on Monday in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action in Buena Vista, Va. The Eagles improve to 7-13 overall, and 5-7 in league play.

In the opener, the Eagles scored three in the first before seeing the hosts post four in the bottom of the inning. Each team scored once in the second, and the Knights grabbed a 9-4 lead with four in the third. The Eagles got one run back in the fifth and scored five in the sixth to grab the lead at 10-9. Each team would add three runs in the seventh, and UMW capped the scoring with two in the ninth.

Jonathan Sedmak and Owen Reilly led the Eagles with a home run and single each, while Noah Roots added three singles. Garrett Lyons and Nick Ciuffreda each had a single and double, and David Lambertson and Sam Freeborne each had two hits, with Lambertson adding a team-high three RBI.

Jamie Kotula picked up the win in relief, allowing three hits and five runs in 5.1 innings, with three walks and five strikeouts. Caleb Thornhill gained the save with a one-hit ninth.

Game two saw the Eagles post two in the first and three in the third in grabbing a 5-2 lead. UMW scored two in the fourth and six in the fifth, before the Knights answered with three in the fifth. The Eagles added another in the sixth and SVU scored twice in the seventh for the 14-7 final.

Caleb McAlister homered and singled to go with two walks and four runs scored, while Lyons posted three singles and Bobby Ayscue a pair of singles for the Eagles.

Zach Adams gained the win, allowing two runs on five hits in six innings, with three walks and six strikeouts.

UMW will be back on the road on Wednesday when they visit St. Mary's College in another conference game at 3 p.m.
